Great news! In March 2023, The Criminal Investigative Function: A Guide for New Investigators has been completely revised and updated to the 4th Edition. I am very proud how this edition has turned out.
Not only is this a brand new edition, I also have a new publisher, Blue 360 Media which bought out the original publisher, Looseleaf Law.
In 2011, the original text was published. Since then it has been updated every few years to keep readers informed of the latest changes in criminal investigations.
New chapter on hate crimes
Each chapter has updated or new material added. I’ve included some new resources, questions, and added an entire new chapter on Hate Crimes Investigations. Hate Crimes have risen in the United States for the past few years. Hate crimes are tough to solve, but I provide some suggestions for investigators.

topics that were added include: The new FBI’s Next Generation Identification (NGI), The National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS), use of drones at crime scenes, and new forensic technologies. The future of criminal investigation is bright with the proliferation of cellphones, Internet records, and video surveillance. In addition, updates on laws and Supreme Court decisions have been included.
